Dragonfly Pond

Pre-event activities/Materials Needed (for Activity Sites): Classes will be sent material to make copies for in-classroom use, along with the background and procedures.  Teachers will need to provide scissors, masking tape, paper, and a large piece of paper (18” x 24’) and will need to prep their students for their presentation ahead of time.  TWA staff will be glad to work with individual classes on their presentation in preparation for the TEXAS CONNECTS program.

Program Description*:

Students will evaluate the effects of different kinds of land use on wetland habitats and discuss and evaluate lifestyle changes to minimize damaging effects on wetlands.

Interaction:

Dragonfly Pond is a Project Aquatic Wild lesson that is unique in that it encourages students to think critically about a timely ecological issue.  TWA will act as the moderator for this session with the kids actually presenting their conclusions to one another.  Students will utilize the materials sent to class ahead of time to construct a map of Dragonfly Pond.  Each school will be selected to represent various interest groups and they will then place the city component around the map in a manner that they feel will best suit their group’s needs.  They will then explain the reasoning for their placements to the other participating schools and will need to be prepared to answer questions from the TWA “Zoning Board”.
