How to Measure a Horse

Pre-event activities/Materials Needed (for Activity Sites): Tape measure, tall dowel stick (such as broom handle), 12-inch ruler, level, carpenter’s ruler

Program Description:

What does a horse’s height have to do with hands?  During this program students will learn how to measure a horse using the tools that horsemen and women use. Then they will learn how to convert their measurement into “hands.”

Interaction:

Students will observe as a cowboy measures a live horse and discusses the steps he uses to make sure that he gets an accurate measurement. Students will then observe and give input as we measure a replica of a pony in the National Cowgirl Museum. Following instructions sent to the classroom before the presentation, students will then have the opportunity to practice measuring objects in their classrooms then changing the measurement to “hands.” As time allows, additional measurement activities will include figuring the area and perimeter of a stall, run, and stantion (area where a horse is branded).
