Activity Sites Pre-event activities/Materials Needed: magnifying glasses, postcards of Sid Richardson Museum image, “Captain Clark of the Lewis and Clark Expedition Meeting the Indians of the Northwest”, copies of National Archive document “List of Indian presents purchased by Meriwether Lewis in preparation for the expedition to the West”. (NARA-SW and the SRM would provide postcards and copies of the documents for one school site, but the school site would need to be able to provide magnifying glasses for the students).

Program Description*:
What do you pack for an 8,000 mile journey? Travel back to 1803, and learn about one aspect of the provisions on the Lewis and Clark Expedition – items used in befriending western Indian tribes. Using a primary source document and a painting by Charles Russell, students will consider cultural encounters during the Expedition.
Interaction:
Students will work in peer groups in an in investigative analysis of a document. Students will engage in an inquiry-based discussion about an artwork. The lesson will be co-presented by two collaborating institutions. Teachers will be introduced to a website, www.artandarchives.org that features lessons sponsored by these two institutions. Post-activities will be suggested.
