ATTN: Activity Sites
Pre-event activities: Each activity site will view a portrait from the Carter’s Collection and prepare a two-minute presentation based on a thirty-second observation of the portrait. (What does the image say about the person?) These First Glance presentations will be the opening activity in the videoconference. The activity sheets and images for the thirty second observations will be mailed or sent electronically or by the museum.

Program Description:
In this program students use art to refine their knowledge of metaphors and symbolism and experience the use of figurative language in writing and visual media.
· Students participate in an inquiry-based tour/discussion of two non-traditional portraits.
· Students write a personal metaphor.
· Students visually express their personal metaphor by sketching an object to symbolize it.
Interaction:
This program is unique in that it draws students into activity and interaction by allowing them to participate through multiple modalities. The group presentation prepared prior to the videoconference and presented within the first few minutes should get students going in a non-threatening way. Next students can respond orally to questioning designed to draw them into a discussion of art objects. (All of our student tours and programs at the Carter are inquiry-based—not art lectures.) Finally, students are actively involved by creating and can interact through the sharing of their written and/or visual metaphors. Bringing fine arts into the classroom can be a unique experience in itself, considering the current emphasis on the core subjects. This program uses fine art to teach a core subject.
